Right In Florida

Motto: This is what happens when Insanity and Banality come together.

Name:
Location: North Central Florida, United States

I'm an aging boomer, white male (cue scary music); not religious, mostly conservative. Married to the same woman forever. No kids-by choice (I believe in personal choice in most areas of life). Voted mostly Republican until November 2000 when the national Democrats tried to steal the election in Florida. I promised to never again vote for another Democrat; kept that promise to date.

Another Nanny Steps Up

Yep, Marion County is the newest nanny on the block. So watch out you evil smokers. No more free ride for employee benefits.

County bars tobacco use by new hires- New policy begins Jan. 1
OCALA - Starting New Year's Day, Marion County government will light up the no-smoking sign for new employees.

Under a new policy that takes effect Jan. 1, county government will no longer consider job applications that do not include sworn affidavits from prospective employees stating that they have not used tobacco products for at least one year and will not use them for as long as they are county employees. If an employee hired after the policy is in place violates it, they may be subject to discipline up to termination.

Yeah, I know all the reasons why the county...and any employer...can do this. And as a long ago former smoker, it would have no impact on me if I were to apply for a county job.

And I believe that an employer should be able to hire-and fire-any person for just about any damn thing.

But damnit, doesn't it seem that there is more and more 'nanny-creep' each day?

Next, they will come for the fat employees, and then those who don't exercise enough.

Hell, I can't wait until someone tries to make the case that promiscuous and unprotected sex causes more health costs than plain ol' boring married sex. And what about homosexuals and AIDS? Can that be far behind?

We so willingly seem to throw our rights and freedoms out, just so long as we get some financial benefit.

Interesting times.

I keep hoping that "this time" the government will have gone too far and people will rise up in protest.

Maybe some day it will actually be true.

I hear you, antimedia. This crap goes on-and has gone on-all the time. This was just another instance of it getting close.

I don't blame employers for cost cutting-that's what they should strive for. But freedoms are too easily lost or at least too cheaply sold.

American governments are supposed to protect freedoms and citizen rights. Well, at least that used to be true.

There is a point when a nanny becomes a nazi. Are we there yet? I don't know...but we may be close.
