Location: North Central Florida, United States

I'm an aging boomer, white male (cue scary music); not religious, mostly conservative. Married to the same woman forever. No kids-by choice (I believe in personal choice in most areas of life). Voted mostly Republican until November 2000 when the national Democrats tried to steal the election in Florida. I promised to never again vote for another Democrat; kept that promise to date.

Pledge of Allegiance...the Marion County Way

I've blogged on something similar to this before.

But this time it's right here at home in Marion County.

Students standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. Or rather, the little bastards not standing.

Superintendent of Schools Jim Yancey met with military veterans Monday and, as expected, agreed that the clause "standing for the Pledge of Allegiance" should remain in the Student Code of Conduct.

Yancey and the veterans also settled on some additional language that, they hope, will ward off potential civil rights lawsuits.

**********

In hopes of deterring lawsuits, the code also includes a citation from the book "Our Flag." Congress has codified the book's guidelines - which include standing - for saying the pledge.

The code further says that "Students who choose not to stand (will obtain written permission from their parents and) will show dignity and respect to their fellow students and staff and will not be punished for choosing not to stand."

Is this important? Well, it doesn't rise to a capital issue of course. But it is right for our darling children to at least acknowledge their home, represented by its flag, is worthy of respect.
